Many Faces

Zayd at Nine Weeks.

Memories

I remember, before Zayd was born, when Khalid and I would go into his room and stare in disbelief at all the baby stuff. We knew that he was eventually coming, but we really had no clue what to expect. Seeing the crib and all of the other baby items in the nursery was totally surreal.

Now the crib is no longer empty--Zayd is here. He came and brought smiles and laughter, a little bit of chaos, and a lot of excitement. Watching him discover new things is like re-discovering them yourself. He looks at the world in pure amazement. I pray that he always sees things that way.

Sleep Baby Sleep

It dawned on me today that Zayd is really starting to sleep through the night. Of course he wakes up once to be fed, but he goes down for as long as 6 hours at a stretch. We have a type of routine that seems to really work for us. Zayd goes down between 9pm and 11pm. I know that's a migty big window, but that's just how it is. No matter when he goes down, he always seems to wake up around 1am for a feeding. I feed him and put him back in his co-sleeper.

Zayd wakes up again between 5am and 6am. This time he wants to eat and play. Khalid and I are mostly up, or close to getting up, so this isn't so, so bad. Zayd goes back down for a long nap around 9am. I used to sleep with him, but lately I've been staying up.

Zayd Loves the Spiders & the Spiders Love Zayd

Two Month Update

Belated Eid Mubarak and all that other good stuff. I just wanted to post to let my readers know that we're alive and all. I haven't taken the time to load up the many pictures I've taken over the weeks, so I haven't updated in a long while. Today seems to be a lazy Sunday, so maybe I'll get the pictures up to share.

My obsession for the week is baby shoes. Kalia turned me on to Robeez back when Adam was younger. I went to their website and literally fell in love. I know Zayd is only 2 months old, but I really feel in my heart of heart that he needs a pair of stylish shoes...or two...or five. Why is baby stuff so cute?

On to less trivial things, alhamdullilah, Zayd received a clean bill of health at his two-month check up. Here are his stats;

Weight: 13 lbs even
Height: 23"
Head Circumfrence: 40"

My baby can roll over from stomach to back, and hold his head up in a 90 degree angle when on his tummy. I am sooo proud of my big boy. Well, Zayd is currently pre-crying in his crib, so I'm going to go get him before he cuts up.

Zayd's First Date

Okay, technically it wasn't really Zayd's date. My husband had the wonderful idea to go out to eat last Monday. We hadn't been out to eat since Zayd was born, so we were both really excited. Baby Adam gave Zayd the cutest outfit of all times, and I decided that Date Night was the perfect occasion to wear it. I got Zayd dressed and put him in the carseat while Khalid and I handled some last minute odds and ends. Sometimes Zayd loves the carseat, other times he hates it. On this night he had to think about what position he wanted to take. It ended with him hating the carseat and kicking his sock off in protest of his confinement. Yes, I got it all on camera.

Our date began with a lovely dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. We then headed to my favorite grocery store of all times, Whole Foods. Our date ended with casual conversation over spiced apple cider at Starbucks. I know this may sound really lame, but I think this might've been my best date ever. It felt so good to be out enjoying a warm fall evening. I never knew a Monday night could be so much fun.

Aside from the sock incident, Zayd was a perfect angel the whole night. He slept through all of dinner, and napped on and off in Starbucks. On the way home he got kind of rowdy, but that was mostly because he was getting hungry. I think we all had a great time.

Zayd's First Photo Shoot

In an effort to provide Zayd with tangible babyhood memories, Khalid and I decided to take a trip to The Picture People for a photo shoot. It seemed that everyone I've ever know with children warned me pre-Zayd just how difficult it would be to get out of the house with a newborn. It seems that they inevitable need to be changed or nursed right when it's time to leave. There is also the high likely hood that your child will spit-up all over you and whatever outfit you attempted to wear. Because of this, I make it a habit to bathe myself, bathe Zayd, get Zayd dressed and in car seat (50/50 chance), then hurry up and throw my clothes on. In my previous life I'd likely have makeup on for a photo shoot, but I didn't get that far.

After a few honest to God tears and some un-Ramadan like rants from my end, we finally left the house. I'm also finding out that I'm a little more anal than I thought about being on time..... I think it's the law school in me. I just knew that if we we got to there too late, they'd tell us that our session had been cancelled. The thought of having to get everyone dressed and prepped again made me want to curl up in a ball and rock from side to side.

My fears were totally unfounded. Once we got to the shop, we still had to wait before starting our session. Of course, by this time, Zayd is in a deep comatose sleep. He's in the type of sleep where no one or nothing can disturb him. Khalid and I try everything to wake our sleeping child. We sing, we rock, we lift him up and down. He'd give us short periods of semi-alertness before dropping his head and heading back to snooze land.

With all these factors, it is safe to say that our pictures were decent at best. On many of the pictures Zayd looks half-dead, and Khalid and I have the tell-tell signs of sleep deprived new parents. All I can say is that we tried.

We're hoping for better luck for his three-month shots....
